Percolator bongs add a second stage of filtration — the perc diffuses smoke through water into a stream of fine bubbles, cooling it and smoothing every hit. More percolation means a smoother draw with a little more airflow resistance.
A percolator breaks smoke into many small bubbles as it passes through water. That extra surface area cools and filters the smoke, so each hit feels noticeably smoother than an un-perc'd tube.
Slightly — percs have more nooks where residue collects. A regular isopropyl-and-salt rinse, shaken through the perc, keeps the bubbles flowing and the flavor clean.
More percs mean smoother smoke but also more drag and more surfaces to clean. A single or double perc is a great balance for most people; stacked multi-perc setups are for those who prioritize maximum smoothness over airflow.
